Google Reader Going Away?

TBT here:  I just received a message claiming to be from Google saying that Google Reader will be shut down July 1st and that we can use a link to "Takeout" that will save our reader list in .png or .jpg format to transfer our list.

1.  I am initially suspicious of the claim, as the links are not directly from google.com.  I couldn't find the statement directly on google.com, but it IS listed in Wikipedia as of today.

2.  If it is true, we who use Google Reader have 3 months to switch to a new reader.

3.  What reader do YOU use?  How happy are you with it?  What are the strengths and weaknesses of it?  I ask the last because some strengths and weaknesses may matter to you but not me.

UPDATE:

We found this list of readers...

We had the same message and had mentioned it in our latest post. Chey has left a comment that her human will be doing some research into an alternative.

Hmmm... I don't know. I like to use the reading list that pops up on Blogger. Is that the same thing? I think the Google reader is the thing I haven't been able to follow blogs with for AGES and that annoys me to no end. I used to be able to click on that and those blogs went into my Blogger thingy and that was great. I think I'm confused... purrs

Got this from Wired Mag: http://blog.feedly.com/2013/03/14/google-reader/

Personally, we don't use Reader.

We got the same message. We use Google Reader all the time so this doesn't make us happy. :(

We just read the message too. We don't know how we're going to keep up with everyone when Reader ends.

I guess I use Google Reader. I follow blogs and use the list that pops up on the Dashboard. If it goes away, I guess I will just use the links on the Cat Blogosphere or my bloglist.

Is it the list on Dashboard? We don't use it all that much, we used to use it every day but the mom got lazy. We'll have to check it out. Maybe its some other Google product.

Yup we got it too. Let's hope - if it's true - our blog administrators will find a good alternative so we can keep up with each other easily.

Lifehacker has a good list too. If you look up google reader replacements there are several. The Male uses Google's Current which will work as a reader, but he's using an Android Tablet so we're not sure how it works on a regular computer. The Woman looked at Feedly, but she's not sure if the feeds are imported or just drawn from google reader (although it does look cool). There's another one that she wants to look at tomorrow when it's not quite so late to see if she likes that. She might do that AND feedly just in case feedly doesn't pull everything in after google shuts down! But we found out we have 423 feeds in our service...

Holy cat! We don't even know what we use. Our Mommy is obsolete and will have to read up. Seems like just as soon as you get comfortable with something...it changes. Happy Thursday, anyway! xoxo

The head peep follows nearly 250 blogs (not all cat blogs, what's wrong with her?) with Google Reader, so this was a real cat-tastrophe when the news broke last night. She's researching now using the various lists out there (the Lifehacker list was really useful), but NewsBlur and Feedly are on the short list, because she wants something that has a nice mobile app, for the (whatEVER) non-cat blogs.

Google tried to tie Reader more tightly into Google+ a couple years ago and it didn't go over well. That must have been the beginning of the end. How unfortunate. :(

I just got this message for the first time this AM, logging in. I use Reader every day to keep up and am dismayed, frankly.

Thanks for posting the list of readers, I'll have to research it. :-/

P.S. I'm following over 300 blogs, or was till I cleared out the dormant ones. So nope, this doesn't impress me AT ALL!

I never learned what is a Google reader. I use the Dashboard unless that is the reader?

It is true. I haven't found anything I really like yet.

We just read blogs off the list on the Blogger dashboard. So far that has worked well for us. Of course you have to keep adding new blogs to the list so it knows you want to follow. Sometimes iif I'm reading a non-blogger blog, we'll follow by email. But we like reading right on the dashboard.
