Caturday Saturday

We learned something about thistle seeds.  Well, ya see, last Winter, we had Goldfinches and Purple Finches crowding our thistle feeders.  It was great Birdie TV!

But then, when TBT bought new seed at the local store, none of the birdies came to eat.  We were very sad...

TBT did all he could.  He changed the seeds every couple weeks, but they just dint like them.  So he did what good Beins do an researched it.

It seems that those Finchy birds only eat really fresh seeds.  And a lot of what is sold at stores isn't all that fresh.  And the seeds the Finchies liked were from an order of 50 pounds of the stuff from one company an the stuff they DINT like was the reglar bagged stuff at the stores.

Well, guess what he did?  Yeah, he hunted up that fresh stuff.  Its at Home Depot online.

So check that out iffen ya have those thistle seed feeders.  Don't worry, the Home Depot doesnt even know we exist.

The Finchies love it.  Our Birdie TV is suddenly active again, and even when TBT moves the feeders around so we cant just reach out an grab the birdies, they find the new spots.

Well, at least we get ta watch them.  Which is pretty good.

Cool tip! Who knew birds were so picky? Maybe that's where the phrase "eats like a bird" comes from.

hey, kitties! that is good to know. we usually see Goldfinches at our thistle socks and this year there were only House Finches. maybe they aren't so particular. we'll have to look for fresher seed. Have a great Caturday and weekend!

Interesting! I had no idea, but we never had finches in our yard, either. We're glad your Bird TV is busy again :)

Mario here: M learned that a few years ago. She gets her seed from a little store downtown and he runs a barebones business. He told her only to buy small sizes of finch feed because they are very picky and don't like the seed when it gets old. Good idea you had there.

That is interesting. We haven't had finch for a couple years, maybe that is why.

I didn't know that, but I suppose they are the same as us because we wouldn't want old food either, would we.

we SO need to have the mom bone up on the birds in our area before the winter sets in. We have this pawesome bird feeder RIGHT on our front window where we can get great closeups...and she is clueless about the food!

Hmmm, birdies can be just as picky about their foods like kitties!

A few years ago we got a bad bag of seed. Bye, bye finches. Mum found out that the seed had been irradiated. So she quit buying that brand, now we have lots of finches. For a while we never saw them at the feeder. Just at the coneflowers, now that they ate all of that, they are back at the feeders.

We must not have picky finches. The mom gets nyjer seed at the grocery store and the finches eat it right up!
