Freaky Friday

And this time the "freaky" is the camera!  Its actin weerd.  We just recently passed 10,000 pictures with it and us is giving us blank areas.  TBT can get around it some.  He can take a diagonal picture like this...
and "straighten" and crop it to this
which looks good but it is more effort.  And some pictures are just useless.

Plus the camera doesn't allow forcing the flashie (which is sort of fine with us), but the "autoflash" is getting worse and guessing when to flash.  And even WE admit that when a good picture is ruined its not a good thing.  And some of the menu controls (like the Macro feature) haven't worked lately.

TBT tried a new memory card, cleaned the lens, the flashie and even the light detector, but that had no effect.  So it looks like he is gonna have to get a new one.

He has bad luck with cameras.  He left one out in the rain, Iza pushed another off the wall onto the staircase, and now this.

Suggestions are welcome.  TBT doesnt need anything fancy.  In fact this Canon SX600HS was way more than he wanted.  The features (and therefore the menus) were way more than he expected.  AS IF he was ever going to fuss with f-stops, lighting levels, time of day, and location-identification.  The manual pop-upflash is an annoyance.  Megapixels aren't worth much either, since he has to reduce the pictures down to around 300kB anyway for the blog.  Even on the rarest occasion when he wants a larger picture, 3mB is fine.

Normal, Macro, and Portrait are sufficient, through wide-angle might be nice.  Controlling the flash on/auto/off is a must.   No need for video, an old Flip does that just fine (and he can't figure out how to post videos annyway).

Can't help with any advice about cameras, I'm afraid - they're not really my thing.

I hope TBT finds a good camera soon! My human doesn't have any suggestions because the point-and-shoot cameras she tends to buy are on the higher end of the price scale, since she does a lot of things on manual settings with them. I'm sure TBT needs something way more simple than what she uses.

Our Mom has a simple Nikon, but she mostly uses her camera phone - she has a new Droid Ultra that takes great pictures. Very simple to use. The flash can be set to auto or turned off.

TBT sounds a lot like this human, with not such great luck with technological devices, and no need for all that extra gadgetry. I sure wish these devices didn't have such minds of their own. My previous camera was just a basic Nikon, without all that extra stuff, and it worked great, and still does!

My mom has a Nikon DSLR. She loves it but only uses it for her landscape and macro photos in Flickr usually. And she mostly uses the phone for the bloggie. She does recommend Nikon brand however. It has never failed. All the humans have their personal favorites. If you go to mom's Flickr page, you'll see what a superb job it does. There are some pictures in my blog taken with it. You can always tell. They actually look good. :-)

We have all kinds of cameras here too and don't use most of the functions.

I have a Nikon that is about one step up from a point and shoot. I'm very happy with it. There are times I wish it could do more than it can do, but for an all around good, easy to use camera, and one that isn't too pricy, it a good one to get.

My mum has a Panasonic point and shoot which takes reasonable photos. One problem with it is that it gets dirt inside which leaves a black spot on the photo. She gets rid of that with the Win.10 blemish tool. She looked online and apparently it is a common problem with Panasonic. When the zoom is used it can suck tiny particles of dust in which settle on the sensor. I thought it was not too long ago that you bought that camera. Is it still under guarantee?

oh NOES! That's not a very nice camera to do that to TBT!

I would first contact canon to see if they have suggestions, or they might even have a blog for peeps with your camera. It should still be warranties I think, because it has not been that long since you got it. Maybe the camera store where you got it can help?

I have this Canon camera:SX40HS I got it a while ago, after having another smaller Canon which is no longer made. There are a lot of features on it, including flash on/off. (I hardly ever use the flash...and it takes pretty good though grainy dim light images)You can use auto mode or program mode. There is a sport mode, which allows for faster frame taking, but I do not hardly use that. I like the zoom feature, and have made some nice picts from far away.It basically a fancier point and shoot. There are way loads of features I do not use/understand...but I do like the ones I do use. Macro, etc. I don't know if they still make this one, or if its been upgraded...it uses a battery that you need to recharge, but it will let you know when that is needed. (Which um...*I* need to do tonight!)

I have not had trouble such as you describe, and have taken over 6000 images, and a few movies(I don't know how to get those up on the blog either...)

Hope this helps a bit...sorry you are not happy with your camera. That is so frustrating indeed.

My son swears by his apple Iphone camera, MOL! Husband has a Canon DSLR which is great but it makes my head spin to even think about trying to use it, MOL!! Other son?? He hardly takes pictures so he uses his phone too. I do also use my Ipad to make some of my pictures, but that can get awkward at times since its so big.

Claire is very happy with her Nikon CoolPix, and often uses her iPhone camera outdoor. We hope TBT finds a camera very soon ! Purrs

We're going to follow these comments because we're in the market for a simple new camera too!

The mom got a new Canon a couple of years ago, and she's not really happy with it anymore. She'd like to get another one, but really can justify spending more money.

I think he should try some videos. Just sign up for youtube and click upload- it does all the work. And to post it, you just put the youtube link to your video into your blog. I have had a Kodak Easyshare for 10 years and a cheap FujiFilm one for 2, the Kodak is the better one.

Boo for cameras! For some reason, my camera is refusing to take any pictures with the flash. For 70-80% of my pictures ... that's just fine. But with action shots and the poor lighting around here, I do need it. So frustrating. Even with the camera on auto-flash, it still won't take pictures ... grrr!

Oh, that's horrible when the camera takes bad pictures. We've been through that. Jan was so happy when she was able to replace our crappy camera a while back with a Sony dsc-wx220. It's so small she takes it on our walks but it takes great pictures.

When we were looking for a camera for Grandpa we discovered that Camera's are way more complicated these day. Most will sync with your computer and upload to clouds and all sorts of things that confuse us. We got him an older one similar to ours but they weren't making them anymore and only had a few left. Mommy actually takes most of our pictures with her phone these days. Samsung Note 5
